Ofakim’s Coffee Cart of Connection

This Passover, we are reminded once again of the power of community, renewal, and transformation. The story of the mobile coffee cart* in our partner city of Ofakim, Israel is a beautiful example of these values in action.

Staffed by some of the most spirited seniors you’ll ever meet, it brews more than just coffee. It stirs up conversation and community. What began as a simple grassroots initiative by elderly residents seeking purpose and connection has blossomed into a vibrant symbol of social change. With every cup poured, stories are shared, wisdom is passed down, and friendships are formed, often between people decades apart in age.

As Yuval Friedman, JDC’s director of Reviving the Spirit in Ofakim, explains: “They wanted to be part of a project that would be meaningful and promote social activity, community engagement, and change. The coffee is just an ‘excuse’ that brings out dozens of people in each neighborhood (even in winter) for activities like music, lectures, or just socializing with one another.”

Much like the story of Exodus, which began with small acts of courage and a shared vision of freedom, this project has grown beyond its humble origins. It demonstrates how one spark of initiative can ignite a larger movement, bringing people together, fostering community spirit, and proving that it’s never too late to make a difference. It is your philanthropic dollars, commitment, and leadership that fuels this initiative through our Annual Campaign. You made this concept come to fruition.

So, as you gather this Passover with matzah, stories, and those questions we ask year after year, we hope this coffee cart from Ofakim reminds you to embrace our own power to create positive change, support one another, and build connections that transform our Greater MetroWest community in New Jersey and in Israel. Just as the coffee cart brings warmth and connection to Ofakim, may we also find ways to nourish the relationships and bonds that hold us together.

Wishing you and your families a sweet and Happy Passover.
