George Clooney and Harry Ettlinger

HARRY ETTLINGER was born in Karsiruhe, Germany. He came to the United States with his immediate family one month before Kristallnacht; his Bar Mitzvah was the last in the city’s synagogue before it was destroyed. After graduating East Side High School in Newark, Harry was drafted by the U.S. Army. Back in Europe, he was pulled out on his 19th birthday from going into the Battle of the Bulge the next day. Three months later in Munich, he volunteered for the group that liberated the Nazi’s huge cache of stolen art and valuables. His story is chronicled in the book The Monuments Men by Robert M. Edsel and the recent movie of the same name directed by George Clooney.
